2017-2018 Religious Ed Calendar

Welcome to the Saint Helen Religious Education Program!

The Parish Community of Saint Helen is a Roman Catholic Church dedicated to worshiping God, by sharing the saving message of Jesus Christ, serving others by supporting, comforting and assisting those in need, and making disciples by fostering the spiritual growth of all its people.

In light of our parish mission statement, our Religious Education Faith Formation classes strive to meet these goals by working together with families to learn about, deepen, and practice our faith. We are all called by Jesus Christ to go forth and make disciples!

With our mission statement in mind, and a focus on being intentional in all that we do, we are excited to share the following information about and changes to our Religious Ed program:

  • Classes take place at 11am or 12:15pm on Sunday, 3:45pm or 5pm M-Th
  • Class start time has been changed to 3:45pm during the week to accommodate students coming from schools on the north side of Westfield and from neighboring towns.
  • Classes are 1 hour, meeting 3-4 times a month
  • Seminarian, AJ DaSilva, will be living and helping out in the parish Friday-Monday beginning in September and will be available to teach Religious Education classes
  • As required by the Archdiocese of Newark, the sacrament program is a two-year preparation program to receive Reconciliation and Holy Communion. As such, this two-year program of sacrament preparation has been renamed Year 1 and Year 2. (if in grade 2, but have not completed 1st year of Religious Education, register for Year 1, receive sacraments in Year 2, join grade level class the following year)
  • All faith formation classes are formed through the Religious Education office
All Year 1 and Year 2 classes will take place at the Parish Center.  This allows us the opportunity to:
  • Provide a consistent offering of experiences for ALL of our Year 1 and Year 2 students
  • Foster the idea that just as we have family community, neighborhood community, school community, we have a parish community at Saint Helen.
  • Schedule class visits from Fr. Michael & Fr. Gabriel
  • Schedule tours of the Church with our Pastoral Associate Marilyn Ryan, and a Spiritual Director for the parish, Ellen Murphy – learning about the Mass
  • Host scavenger hunts in the church
  • Share in small prayer services in the church
  • Participate in Move, Worship, Pray sessions in the gym
  • Show short faith based, curriculum related movies in the gym (Brother Francis, Alive in Christ, Formed.org video for children, etc.)
  • Utilize supplemental, hands on materials for use in the PC classrooms (Faith-based puzzles, card games, Last supper Legos, pop-up mass kits, to name a few)

Regular classes begin the week of September 24, 2017 and end the week of March 18, 2018.

Full participation in Holy Week activities is encouraged, especially attending Good Friday Outdoor Stations of the Cross for young children (families attend together) on Friday, March 30, 2018 at noon.

All families with children in grades 1-5 are encouraged to attend the 9:30am Sunday Mass
  • Children's Liturgy of the Word is offered. Families attend mass together and children in grades 1-5 are invited to go with the leader to hear the scripture on their level, participate in activities related to the Gospel, and return to church to participate in the Liturgy of the Eucharist and remainder of the mass with their families.
  • Kids Corner Preschool Worship and Kids Corner Kindergarten are offered during the 9:30am Mass for children ages 2 1/2 years - Kindergarten. For more information about Kids Corner please check out our website at https://www.sainthelen.org/index.php/faith-formation/kidscorner2

Kids Corner and Children's Liturgy of the Word will end Jun 18, 2017 and will resume September 17, 2017

There are many opportunities for you to be involved in your child’s faith formation. You guide each child by how you live your life, by how you practice your belief in a loving God, and by the importance you place on the faith formation of your child! The importance that you place on your commitment to religious education is the same importance that your child will have for this formation. It cannot be stressed enough how integral a part you play in modeling the practice of the faith for your child.

Registration for the 2017 -18 school year will take place in June

Children’s Liturgy of the Word
will resume September 17, 2017

During the 9:30 am Sunday Mass the celebrant calls children in grades 1 to 5 to be led by a religious education leader to the parish center and they are brought back to the church after the homily during the offertory.   The Children's Liturgy of the Word program focuses on the spiritual needs of elementary school children.  Boys and girls have the opportunity to learn about the Mass through small group interaction. Prayers and readings for the specific week are highlighted and discussed.  Children are encouraged to ask questions.  They are given the opportunity to relate what they have learned to their own life experiences.  The program enables boys and girls to make a closer connection to our Lord and His teachings.
For our younger parishioners (Age 2 1/2 to Kindergarten) please see the Kids Corner LINK
