Protecting God's Children


Archdiocesan guidelines require that all volunteers over the age of 18 ~ catechists, coaches, chaperones, homeless volunteers, scout leaders, retreat volunteers, etc. who have not taken this course to do so in order to volunteer.

In accordance with requirements mandated by the Archdiocese of Newark, all adults, staff and volunteers alike, involved with the children and teenagers of our parish must comply with the following requirements:
  1. Complete an application (click here to download a copy)
  2. Read “Archdiocesan Policies with respect to Conduct with Minors and certain Reporting Obligations” (click here to download a copy)
  3. Sign an acknowledgement form for the policies (click here to download a copy)
  4. Attend a Protecting God’s Children Workshop (Visit http://www.rcan.org/charter/index.htm for a complete schedule of Protecting God's Children Workshops in our area)

FIRST TIME ATTENDING A WORKSHOP? You must pre-register at www.virtusonline.org. Select the Newark (Archdiocese). When prompted, you must indicate in the "LOCATION" that you'll be volunteering at St. Helen Church.

NEED TO ATTEND THE WORKSHOP AGAIN? Volunteers must retrain every three years.  If you have taken Protecting God’s Children more than 3 years ago we will be holding Keeping the Promise Alive Recertification Program. This is a 90 minute session.  You must sign up for this using your original Virtus login.  You will then choose the option for Live training to choose the session you wish to attend.  If you do not know you login contact  Mike Fusco This email address is being protected from spambots. BACKGROUND CHECKS MUST BE PERFORMED EVERY FIVE YEARS. Please email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.   to confirm the last date of your background check before you order a new one.

How to Report Abuse: The Archdiocese of Newark takes very seriously any and all allegations of sexual misconduct by members of the clergy, Religious and lay staff of the Archdiocese. We encourage anyone with knowledge of an act of sexual misconduct to inform us immediately so that we may take appropriate action to protect others and provide support to victims of sexual abuse. Individuals who wish to report an allegation of sexual misconduct may do so by calling the Archdiocesan Office of Child and Youth Protection at (201) 407-3256.

The Protecting God’s Children Workshop provides sexual abuse awareness training. This workshop is helpful whether you are a teacher, parent, grandparent, neighbor, coach, scout leader or friend of a child. Everyone should be aware of the warning signs of child abuse.
